This scale model of an ornithopter (from the Dune series), featuring embedded, functional fans, was created as an exercise in embedding foreign parts into a 3D print.  The ornithopter, with features designed to resemble a bird, was modeled from scratch in Rhinoceros with support from the T-splines plugin, and then printed on a high-resolution Objet 3D-printer.

 

The video below shows the scale model in action, with special attention given to the embedded parts and their functionality. I also wrote a tutorial how to model one of the wings, which can be found here.
